Buying or Possessing Vehicles with Altered VIN Numbers | Vehicle Code 10803 VC
Buying or possessing more than one vehicle (or parts of more than one vehicle), when such vehicles or parts contain vehicle identification numbers (VIN) that are manipulated and the vehicles or parts are purchased for resale or another transfer.
Vehicle Code 10803 is a “wobbler” offense in California. This means that the prosecutor has discretion to charge it either as a felony or as a misdemeanor.
Penalties
If the offense is considered a misdemeanor in California, Vehicle Code 10803 is punishable by:
- Up to one year in county jail, and/or a fine of up to $1,000
If the offense is considered a felony, possession of vehicles or parts under Vehicle Code 10803 is punishable by:
- 16 months, or two or three years in county jail and/or
- A fine of up to $30,000.
If a felony, the purchase of multiple vehicles or parts carries a penalty of:
- Two, four or six years in county jail and/or
- A fine of up to $60,000.
