Often we think of bribery as involving public officials. But in California bribery can also occur in a private business setting. When bribery happens in a business environment, it’s called “commercial bribery.” A commercial bribery charge can be very serious. You can lose your reputation and your career. You may be sent to jail.

The penalty for commercial bribery depends on the amount of the bribe. It can be a misdemeanor or a felony. 

• If the bribe is under $1,000, you may be sent to county jail for up to one year.
  
  
• But if the bribe is over $1,000, you may be sent to county jail or California state prison for up to three years.
