Definition
California law defines concealment when you violate the law, that is when you assist a wrongdoer after he/she has committed a serious crime, helping in their escape from arrest, trial, conviction and/or punishment.
Sanctions or Penalties
Being a concealer means prosecutors can file the charge as either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the facts of the case and/or your criminal history.
- If found guilty, you face a fine of up to $5,000
- Up to one year in county jail as a misdemeanor or
- 16 months, or two or three years in California State Prison for a felony.
Also, if the underlying crime was a crime of moral turpitude or another deportable crime, you could face deportation/removal even if you are a legal or undocumented immigrant.
Legal Defenses
Depending on how the facts occurred, there may be legal defenses that can help fight the accusation of “concealment.” A criminal defense attorney at Progresso Legal Group P.C. can represent you.
