Legal Definition

Filing a false report is a crime and applies when someone falsely reports a misdemeanor or felony to a police officer, prosecutor, jury, or state employee such as a 911 operator.
The law applies to situations where a person takes the initiative to contact the police and makes a false report. But it also applies to cases where a third party initially reports the crime, and the defendant gives a false witness statement once the police have begun their investigation.

By committing a misdemeanor through filing a false report of a crime to the police or other authorities, the defendant faces up to six months in county jail, but in some cases, the judge may grant probation with little or no jail time.
